The Department of Environmental Studies, established in 2014 at the orders of the Supreme Court, teaches a compulsory paper “Environmental Science” as an Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), to first year students w.e.f. session 2015-2016. The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the natural environment, its importance and various environmental issues, to the first year students of all disciplines. During 2017-2018, the department organized education field visit for students to the Aravalli Biodiversity Park , Vasant Kunj, and Yamuna Biodiversity Park, Wazirabad as a part of the curriculum in October 2017 and February-March 2018. These parks are owned and developed by Delhi Development Authority (DDA), with technical inputs by the Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems (CEMDE), University of Delhi and DDA. These parks educate students about ecosystem, biodiversity conservations and ecological restoration. The students gain practical knowledge and experience that increases their interest in the conservation of environment. The department organized seventeen visits between the two parks in order to accommodate all the students over the course of two semesters (Picture 1&2).

The department also worked with “Give me Trees,” a charitable trust in Delhi, in collaboration with AVANI, the Environment Club of the college, to work for “Ecozone” developed in the college premises. The students learnt how to make Bio-enzyme and its importance. Students also got involved in various activities viz, seed collection, sapling plantation and nest making from the waste

In Semester I (August- November 2017), the students also worked with the college Garden Committee to clean and maintain the college gardens under the guidance of Dr. Nisha Malik (Hindi department) and gained knowledge about herbs and plants



The Department of Environmental Studies started in 2015 headed by Dr. Jitendra Gill consists of two specialists, Dr. NemikaRelhan and Ms. IfrahRehman. The AECC curriculum involves teaching Environmental Studies to first year students across all courses and includes both in-house learning and eco-tours for better understanding of the theoretical syllabus. The students are inculcated with deep rooted environmentally sustainable behavior and psyche. The course aims at improving the current conditions of the planet and conservation work by enhancing the knowledge base of environmentally aware gen-next.

The department is also involved with AVANI-the Eco club of JDM College providing expertise and indulging students in green work in the campus like drafting the annual Green Audit for the college, recording rain water harvesting program, renewable energy schemes etc.
