Ringing in the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi, August 1, 2019

The Hon. Vice President of India acknowledged Janki Devi Memorial College's emergence as a prominent Delhi University College and its contribution to Women's Empowerment / Mahila Shasastikaran

Early in the morning, by 7.30 am, the college was full and buzzing with excitement to welcome the Hon. Vice President of India, Sh. Venkaiah Naidu and the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Sh. Yogesh Kumar Tyagi on the occasion of the Founder's Day of Janki Devi Memorial College. The Founder's Day is an annual event held to remember the contribution of the illustrious founder of Janki Devi Memorial College, Sh. Brijkrishan Chandiwala, the eminent Gandhian who was committed to the cause of women's education. This year the Founder's Day also set in motion the year -long 60th Anniversary celebrations of the college and the college was honoured to have the inauguration of the Distinguished Speakers Series with the first lecture delivered by the Hon. Vice-President.

In keeping with the environment conscious traditions of our college, each guest planted a sapling. After the lighting of the lamp, there was a scintillating performance by Nupur, the Indian classical dance society of JDMC.

Prof Tyagi in his speech welcomed all the first- year students of JDMC and wished them a happy new session, stressing that studying at Delhi University, which has some of the best faculty in the world, is indeed a privilege.

Dr Swati Pal, Principal, JDMC, welcomed the Vice President and all present with her speech and a short film about the evolution of the college since its inception. Its Foundation stone was laid by none other than Pandit Nehru in 1960 and since then the college portals have welcomed many esteemed dignitaries. Dr Pal spoke of the diamond like qualities of the college: its evolution, its inherent quality, shine and worth and above all, its endurance and invincibility: the theme also of the Diamond jubilee celebrations of the college. She reminded the students to always be inspired by Bhaiji's devotion to truth, purity, simplicity, philanthropy and the vision of women's self-reliance and to remain grounded as humane and good individuals.

This was followed by the Inaugural Distinguished Lecture by Sh Venkaiah Naidu, eagerly awaited by the students.

The Hon. Vice President congratulated the college for being one of the prominent educational institutions and for promoting women's empowerment. He began by praising the social commitment of the college as evidenced in the activities of the NCC, NSS, Equal Opportunities Cell, Gandhi Study Circle. He also took cognizance of how the college assisted and helped empower the differently abled and lauded the Environment conscious policies and infrastructure. He told the students how important it is to keep nature and culture in sync with each other. Furthermore he discussed the aims of an ideal education. It must be geared towards knowledge generation, equal opportunities, employment and above all towards morality. He spoke of the reverence for the feminine in ancient Indian cultural practices and hoped that this would be instilled in the future also. He paid tribute to Bhaiji's vision and shared many amusing but thought - provoking observations about cultural practices that form the context of modern education in the true sense of the word. His speech, laud with humour and his personal interaction with students, made the audience, respond with full hearted applause.

The vote of thanks was offered by Prof. Brajesh Chaudhary the Chairman of the Governing Body of the College who also spoke about the need for constant assessment and re-evaluation in the education system.

Dr Pal felicitated all the guests with saplings, mementos and gifts.

Indeed, it was the perfect start to the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Janki Devi Memorial College.

     जानकी देवी मेमोरियल कॉलेज (1959 – 2019) के हीरक जयंती समारोह का प्रारम्भ उपराष्ट्रपति महामहिम श्री वेंकैया नायडू द्वारा विशिष्ट वक्तव्य  श्रंखला के पहले वक्ता से हुआ | कॉलेज के इस विशिष्ट अवसर पर दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के उप कुलपति प्रोफ़ेसर योगेश त्यागी, कॉलेज गवर्निंग बॉडी के सभापति प्रोफ़ेसर बृजेश चौधरी, कॉलेज के बनारसी दास सेवा स्मारक ट्रस्ट के चेयरमैन श्री आदित्य कृष्णा मुख्य अतिथि के रूप मे उपस्थित थे |

      1 अगस्त के प्रातः लगभग 2000 छात्राओ, प्रवक्ता व ऑफिस के कर्मचारियों की बड़ी संख्या से भरे ऑडिटोरियम मे कार्यक्रम का प्रारम्भ हुआ |  सर्वप्रथम प्रोफ़ेसर त्यागी ने छात्राओ को संबोधित किया |  अपने संबोधन में उपकुलपति ने स्त्री – शिक्षा के महत्व पर बल दिया तथा सभागार मे उपस्थित  छात्राओं को भावी भारत का प्रेरणा स्रोत  बताया |  अपने स्वागत उद्बोधन में प्राचार्या डॉ स्वाति पाल ने कॉलेज के इतिहास के बारे  में संक्षिप्त रूप से चर्चा करते हुए विगत वर्षों में कॉलेज की प्रगति व उन्नति के बिन्दुओं को विशेष रूप से समाहित किया |  इस अवसर पर नुपुर सोसायटी ने सांस्कृतिक कार्येक्रम प्रस्तुत किया व एक लघु फिल्म भी दिखाई गई |

     उपराष्ट्रपति श्री नायडू सहित सभी विशिष्ट अतिथियों ने कॉलेज के उद्यान में वृक्षारोपण किया जो कि कॉलेज कि एक विशिष्ट परम्परा रही है |   श्री वेंकैया नायडू ने लगभग 30 मिनट के अपने व्याख्यान में उपस्थित छात्राओं को उनकी उपलब्धियों पर बधाई दी और व्यवहारिक जीवन के कुछ मूल मन्त्र भी सिखाए |  पूरे विश्व को एक कुटुंब मानते हुए भी अपने देश और संस्कृति के प्रतिसम्मान सर्वोच्च होना चाहिए |  श्री नायडू ने इस बात पर भी बल दिया कि कोई भी भाषा ,संस्कृति बुरी नहीं है पर उन्हें सीख कर अपनी संस्कृति के उत्थान का प्रयास करना चाहिए |  हल्के फुल्के अंदाज़ मे उन्होंने कहा कि अपनी भाषा आँख के समान  है और दूसरी भाषा चश्मे के समान |  बिना आँख के चश्मे का कोई महत्व नहीं है |  एक सफल व सांस्कृतिक व्यक्ति को जीवन मे पांच बातों का ध्यान रखना चाहिए - माँ , मातृभूमि, मातृभाषा, संस्कृति, गुरु | 

छात्राओं ने बार - बार करतल ध्वनि से उपराष्ट्रपति महोदय के कथनों का स्वागत किया |   अपने धन्यवाद ज्ञापन मे प्रोफेसर  बृजेश चौधरी ने पुनः कॉलेज की उपलब्धियों को कॉलेज का गौरव बताया |  इस सफलता के लिए उन्होंने कॉलेज प्राचार्या डॉ. स्वाति पाल के प्रयासों की भूरि भूरि प्रशंसा भी की |  उपराष्ट्रपति व अन्य गणमान्य अतिथियों के प्रति धन्यवाद ज्ञापन के बाद राष्ट्रगान के साथ कार्यक्रम संपन्न हुआ | 

Founders's DayReport- 2018

The newly constructed Krishna Hostel of JDMC was inaugurated by the Honorable former President of India ,ShriPranabMukherjee, on the 1st August 2018 on the occasion of the Founderís Day of the college. The presenceand inspirational words of Dr.Pranab Mukherjee struck the chord of the students and teachers alike as he spoke for greater investment of resources in the field of education. Theesteemed Vice-chancellor of University of Delhi, Prof. YogeshK.Tyagi also graced this occasion which was attended by Prof. SwatiSaha and Dr. Adity Krishna. August members of the college governing body, Dr. Swati Pal, Principal of the college, presided over the function which was conducted successfully by the staff advisors- Dr. Jayanti P. Sahoo and Dr. SipuJayswal and the team of students, teaching and non-teaching staff.

Founder's Day 01st August, 2016

Janki Devi Memorial College Celebrates 58th Founderís Day

The bright and auspicious morning of August 1, 2016witnessed the celebrations of the 58th Founder’s Day of Janki Devi Memorial College.The occasion was graced by Shri. Aditya Krishna, the Chairman of the Brij Krishna ChandiwalaSewa Smarak Trust who was also the chief guest. He was joined by Ms. Kusum Krishna, chairperson, college governing body, Dr. (Mrs.) Kunj Gupta, member governing body, Professor. Shreemati Chakravarti, University of Delhi representative.

The occasion began with a beautiful rendition of the college prayer. This was followed by a tribute by Sarang, the Indian Music Society of the college, to Shri Brij Krishan Chandiwala (Bhaiji) - the founder of the college. The guests were felicitated by the principal Dr. Swati Pal with potted plants and a book written by Dr. (Mrs.) Hem Bhatnagar (principal, JDMC during 1985-86), which recounts her experiences of the academic, social and cultural life of the college.

In her welcome address, Dr. Swati Pal paid a tribute to the founder of the college Shri Brij Krishan Chandiwala, who founded the college in the memory of his mother Smt. Janki Devi in 1959 in order to promote women’s education and empowerment. She also acknowledged the immense contribution made by Bhaiji to the field of women's education in a newly independent India with all the challenges that it entailed. She also appreciated the fortitude of the teaching, non- teaching staff and students in organising the day's event.

Kritika Kumar, a student of Nupur, the Classical Indian Dance Society presented a fabulous performance of Thillana, a concluding piece in the Bharatnatyam repertoire, exemplifying pure dance.

The chief guest, Shri Aditya Krishna, highlighted the importance of education and financial independence especially for women in India. He also spoke of the need to overcome the social, cultural, and gendered constraints that women face in their everyday lives. He spoke of the importance of failure and passion to one's growth as an individual.

Mrs. Kusum Krishna recounted many incidents from Bhaiji's life and his varied contributions to the social uplift and welfare of the marginalised groups. She underscored how his social engagements are still relevant today in the form of the Swachh Bharat and the Beti Bachaao programmes initiated by the current government. She encouraged the students to take his legacy forward.

The celebrations were concluded by the felicitation of select teaching and non-teaching staff on completion of 25 years of meritorious services, offered to the institution.
