Annual Report 2016-2017

Logos - The English Literary Society of Janki Devi Memorial College was formulated in 2016 as an initiative of the students. Guided by our professor, mentor and convenor of the society, Dr. Payal Nagpal, Logos aims to build a community of literature enthusiasts in the college with participation from all the departments. The society focuses on a slew of activities and events that give students a chance to discuss various issues, try their hand at writing and spoken word poetry, and holds impromptu poetry jams, book reading and lit quiz sessions, and much more in the weekly meetings.

Right after the formulation of Logos in 2016, the college witnessed two wonderful events organised by Logos in the same year.

The first event that the society organised was a talk by the esteemed Norwegian author Johan Harstad. Having been awarded the Brage prize in 2008 and the Norwegian Ibsen Award in 2014, Harstad is extremely well known for his insightful works such as 172 Days on the Moon ? and Buzz Aldrin. It was a conference open to the faculty and all the students of the college, where he discussed about his works, answered questions, and shared his own experiences as a playwright and author.

The society also organised an inter-college poetry slam in the later half of the year. It was a gathering of poetry enthusiasts from all over Delhi University and other Universities as well. The competition had a slot for 22 participants out of which three were awarded with the first, second and third prizes. The competition was judged by Ambikesh Sharma, a well known name in the spoken word scene, and, Ronojoy Sircar, one of the professors of the college and a poet himself. The winners were Diksha Bijlani, Mariyam Fatima and Ditsa Bhattacharya The event was sponsored by The Local Tribe.

The members of the society hold weekly meetings to discuss further events that they wish to organise, to have interactive sessions on various topics, have a friendly chat and talk about a recent movie, give book reviews, have impromptu sessions of Lit Quiz and Spoken Word.

Interactive Session with Johan Harstad – Report

On 23rd September, 2016, Logos- the English Literary Society of Janki Devi Memorial College conducted its first event, with an interactive session by Norwegian author, Johan Harstad. Conducted as a part of the second edition of ‘The Long Night of LiteratureS’, a literary initiative supported by the European Union in collaboration with various embassies and cultural institutions, the session saw a full house with students as well as faculty members from the college turning up for the talk.

During the session, Harstad talked about his experience as an author, and addressed some of the questions he gets asked most frequently. Hence, the event was especially more interesting for the students who look forward to taking up writing as a profession, since Harstad’s talk mostly involved his struggles as well as motivations for continuing to write in the initial stages of his profession. The talk was followed by a Q&A session with the audience, who mostly asked about specificities of his work, as well as his experience in growing as a writer. The student members of Logos then put forward a small performance for the author, where they performed excerpts from poems they had themselves composed.

The event was facilitated by Dr Swati Pal, the principal of Janki Devi Memorial College as well as Dr PayalNagpal, the Head of the English Department of the college.
