Project on Challenges to Mothering: Case Studies of Adoption and ART
Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar is working on the project 'Challenges to Mothering: Case Studies of Adoption and ART' along with Dr. Rajyalakshmi and Dr. Ruby Bhardwaj. The project was initiated in August, 2020.
Project on Building social and emotional wellbeing in young adults
The present project seeks to empower young women students in the age group of 18 to 21 year to realise their potential fully and face the challenges with confidence. It seeks to bolster the academic training with that of soft skills by balancing their need for career advancement, self- fulfillment and emotional security through suitable intervention strategies. The project endeavors to closely engage with and study the various social emotional aspects associated with young adults' well being such as managing developmental transitions, building specific competences and acquiring skills for overall personal development. This project was initiated in September, 2018 by the Project coordinators, Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar (faculty, Department of HDFE) and Dr. Ruby Bhardwaj (faculty, Department of Sociology).

The Department of HDFE organised a webinar on the topic 'Addressing Present day life Situations through Ancient Indian Traditions' under the project "Social and Emotional wellbeing in Young adults" on March 22nd, 2021. The speaker for this webinar was Dr. Rekha Navneet, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, Gargi College, University of Delhi. Around 60 people participated in the webinar.
Magnetic communication - Speak to Impact - March 16th, 2021
The Department of HDFE is organised a webinar on the topic 'Magnetic Communication - Speak to Impact' under the project "Social and Emotional wellbeing in Young adults" on March 16th, 2021. The speaker for this webinar was Mr. Suveen Kumar, Counseling Psychologist, author, Founding member at Emo Matrix and Your Hope Line and a member of American Psychology Association and United Nations NGO network. It was a very interesting and engaging webinar. Around 100 people participated in the webinar including the students and faculty of JDMC.
- Webinar on Ensuring Emotional Wellbeing during Covid Crises - April 29th, 2020
The department of HDFE organised a webinar on the topic 'Ensuring Emotional Wellbeing during Covid Crises' under the project "Social and Emotional well being in Young adults" on 29th April, 2020. The webinar was organised by Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar (faculty, JDMC) and was moderated by Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar (faculty, JDMC) and Ms. Prerna Butta (faculty, JDMC). The speaker of the webinar was Dr. Rekha Sapra, acting Principal, Bharti College. The session was very interactive and informative. She discussed about many topics like quarantine and isolation, mindfulness, importance of accepting things, quality time, rhythm and routine, anxiety, to name a few. More than 100 people participated in the webinar including Principal, JDMC; faculty of JDMC and other colleges (Bharti, Aditi Mahavidyalaya, SPM) and students of JDMC and other colleges. The workshop was conducted by Mr.Vikas Chandwani, Soft skills trainer and Life coach. It was held under the project 'Building Social & Emotional Well-being among Young Adults'. Student Research Projects
Project on Early detection of white eye reflex in children
The ongoing sensitization project on 'Early detection of white eye reflex in children' (underprivileged children) was launched in November, 2017. The Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment of Janki Devi Memorial College, has been actively working on Retinoblastoma, a life threatening cancer in children below six years of age. The students screen the eyes of the children with a smart phone in health centers, anganwadis, construction sites and hospitals. They also sensitize health workers, doctors and parents regarding this disease. Children from this project are referred to Centre for Sight. This project was conceptualized by Ms.Nirmala Muralidhar, faculty JDMC with the guidance of Dr.Vikas Menon, Consultant Ocular Oncology, Centre for Sight New Delhi.
The three phases of this project have been successfully completed. Some activities covered this year, under this project were:-
World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week - May 9th, 2021 - May 15th, 2021
Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment organized "World Retinoblastoma Awareness week" from May 9th, 2021 to May 15th, 2021. Many activities (in virtual mode) will be done in this week to spread awareness about RB.
Activities like Posters for Public awareness; Screening of movie Shwaas (10th May, 2021); sensitization through video call amidst the pandemic and screening parents on the use of smartphones for Eye screening.
World Cancer Day - February 4th, 2021
In keeping with the slogan of World Cancer Day, 'I am & I will', the students & faculty of HDFE Department of JDMC & other colleges came together to create awareness on retinoblastoma a life threatening eye cancer in children.
The students of HDFE Department have been working on a community project on 'Early detection and screening of white eye reflex in children' in collaboration with Centre for Sight. With Dr. Vikas Menon, Ocular Oncologist as the Project advisor and Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar, faculty JDMC as the Project coordinator. This year we organised a video competition in collaboration CFS. On February 4th, 2021, Dr. Vikas Menon declared the results of Video completion and shared his experience of judging this competition.

Video competition - January 28th, 2021
Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment, JDMC in collaboration with Centre for Sight organised a Video competition on 'Early Detection and Screening of White Eye Reflex'. Around 64 students from 2nd and 3rd year (HDFE) participated in this competition. The videos were judged by Dr. Vikas Menon (Consultant, Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Ocular Oncology, Centre for Sight).
On February 4th, 2020 the results of this Video competition were declared by Dr. Vikas Menon.

The II and III year students (63) of HDFE department, JDMC received collaborative certificates of achievement from Centre for Sight and Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi, for actively working on the Project 'Early Detection and Screening of White Eye Reflex' from July, 2019 to May, 2020.
Online Poster making Competition - May 26th, 2020
Department of HDFE, JDMC in collaboration with Centre For Sight, New Delhi organised an online poster making competition on the occasion of World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week. The theme of the Online Poster making competition was, 'Creating Awareness on Retinoblastoma'. Around 54 students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year (HDFE) participated in this competition.
On 26th May, 2020 the results of the online poster making competition were declared by Dr. Mahipal Sachdev, Chairman and medical director, Centre For Sight. Dr. Vikas Menon (Consultant, Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Ocular Oncology, Centre for Sight) shared his experience of judging this competition.

Walkathon - Strides for Retinoblastoma Awareness - February 25th, 2020
The Department of HDFE, Janki Devi Memorial College in collaboration with Centre for Sight, Dwarka, organised a "Strides for Retinoblastoma Awareness" a public awareness campaign for Eye cancer in children on 25th February, 2020. Many people participated in the walkathon: students from JDMC, Bharati College & Aditi Mahavidyalaya, senior citizens, staff of CFS. After the walkathon, students presented a nuked natak (Street play) to create awareness about eye cancer in children. Dr. Mahipal Sachdev, Chairman, CFS addressed the gathering & appreciated the initiative. He thanked all the participants and presented memento to Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar. - World Cancer Day - February 4th, 2020
On the world cancer day, the department of HDFE organised an 'Awareness and sensitisation campaign on Retinoblastoma' in college and at Centre for Sight, Dwarka.
We launched 'Internship program on Rehabilitative services in Oncology' in the seminar room. The mentor for the internship is Dr Bhumika Rathore, founder and head for a Maxillofacial prosthetic unit at Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi; certified for Ocular and Orbital prosthesis and mentor for Rehabilitative services through Maxillofacial prosthesis. Students also performed a street play to create awareness about retinoblastoma and distributed flyers.
The students and the faculty of the department conducted an awareness activity at Centre for sight, Dwarka, wherein they distributed flyers to the patients in the hospital and performed a street play, creating awareness and sensitising the people about retinoblastoma, its signs and symptoms and how to screen the white eye reflex with the help of a smart phone. The play was very well received by the patients and doctors of the hospital.
- 16th September, 2019 - Eye checkups at little planet playschool
The students of the department of HDFE, participated as volunteers for the eye checkups for the children of 'Little planet' playschool. Eye checkup was done at CFS, Dwarka. The team of CFS was also involved in this activity. The department of HDFE acted as facilitators for this event. (Details uploaded on website with photos)
- 21st August, 2019 - Sensitistion workshop at Delhi Police Training School
The Department of HDFE in collaboration with CFS, New Delhi conducted a sensitisation workshop for 415 trainee constables at the Delhi Police Training School, Dwarka. A group of 40 students, faculty members and Dr. Vikas Menon from CFS, was involved in this activity. Students sensitized the trainees about retinoblastoma, its signs and symptoms and how to screen the white eye reflex with help of a smart phone. A Multimedia presentation on retinoblastoma was done by Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar, faculty on screening of eye cancer in children. - 16th April, 2019 - Valedictory Session
The valedictory session of the second batch of students was held on 16th April, 2019 where collaborative certificates of JDMC and CFS were awarded to the students and to Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar (project coordinator) by Dr. Vikas Menon. This project is a unique initiative where an academic institution and a super speciality eye care institution come together for a noble cause.
- Public awareness campaign on Retinoblastoma on World Cancer Day - February 4th, 2019
The Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment, Janki Devi Memorial College in collaboration with Centre For Sight & Womenite organized a public awareness campaign on Retinoblastoma, life threatening eye cancer in children up to six years of age. Each year on February, 4th, World Cancer Day empowers all of us across the world to show support, raise our collective concern, take personal action and unite under one banner of cancer in a positive and inspiring way. The walk was flagged off by Dr. Mahipal Sachdev (Chairman and Managing Director, CFS, New Delhi). The peace walk covered the residential areas of Safdarjung enclave to create awareness among the residents on eye cancer in children. More than 100 students actively participated in the peace walk to create awareness.
This is a unique initiative where students, faculty, NGO, survivor, Ophthalmologists, Ocular Oncologists from super speciality eye care institution joined hands in creating awareness about eye cancer in children. (Details uploaded on website with photos)
- World Cancer Day- Strides for Retinoblastoma Awareness - February 4th ,2018 -
The Department of Human Development And Family Empowerment(HDFE) successfully launched an awareness campaign on Retinoblastoma(a life threatening eye cancer in children)at Janki Devi Memorial College on 7th November, 2017.The campaign was planned with the help and guidance of Dr. Vikas Menon (Consultant, CFS, New Delhi) .The Students and Faculty took a pledge to spread awareness about the cause and also about detecting Retinoblastoma with the help of a smartphone. To take this awareness initiative ahead the Department of HDFE in collaboration with Centre For Sight and Womenite on World Cancer Day that is, 4th Feb 2018 organized "Strides for Retinoblastoma Awareness". More than 200 people including Students, Faculty, Parents and Friends joined us in the awareness walk led by a 19 year old survivor. The walk started from JDM College towards old Rajinder Nagar, Shankar road, Ganga Ram Hospital and back to the college. We would like to thank Dr. Mahipal Sachedev (Chairman,Medical Director, CFS, New Delhi), Dr. Swati Pal (Principal, JDMC), Harshit Gupta (Founder, Womenite) and his team along with Delhi police for their cooperation and support. Awareness campaign on RB Launch of Awareness campaign on Retinoblastoma -November 7th, 2017
The Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment (HDFE) successfully launched an awareness campaign in collaboration with Centre for Sight (CFS), New Delhi on Retinoblastoma (a life-threatening eye cancer in children) at Janki Devi Memorial College on 7th November 2017. The launch event was organized in the seminar room of the college at 10.30 AM.
The campaign covered the following activities:
- A sensitization lecture and presentation on Retinoblastoma delivered by Dr Ritesh Narula (CFS).
- A 19-year old survivor's account of battling with RB.
- Presentation by Dr. Bhumika Rathore from CANKIDS that focused on Fight RB India movement.
- A pledge by the students and faculty of JDMC to fight against Retinoblastoma.
- Silent march by the students in the college campus to show solidarity for the cause and spread awareness.
Dr. Vikas Menon, consultant, Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and Ocular Oncology, Centre for Sight, New Delhi; has been exceptional in his role as the Mentor of this campaign and in providing immense support and cooperation in organizing it.
Dr Santosh Honavar, Director, Medical Services, CFS Group & Director, Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Orbit and Ocular Oncology, Centre for Sight, Hyderabad; in the capacity of an Advisor of this campaign, has been instrumental in conceptualizing the campaign and offering his methodical guidance on the initiative.
The campaign received an overwhelming response from the students as well as the college faculty. Students' across disciplines attended the talk in great numbers and participated enthusiastically in preparing badges and placards for the campaign 'Fight the White'. It has been an extremely gratifying and enriching experience for us to learn and share more on the issue. The campaign also received media coverage in the print and online social media. Project on Little hands at work: A study on child workers in Delhi NCR
This Student-Faculty research project attempts to understand the lives of child workers and the challenges they face especially in Covid times and their strategies to manage the same. It also aims to examine the challenges faced by children who are balancing the work and school activities. It also strives to study the impact of Covid on the lives of child workers and to find out the coping strategies to deal with daily life. This project was initiated in August, 2020 by the project coordinators, Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar (faculty, Department of HDFE) and Ms. Prerna Butta (faculty, Department of HDFE). It is a faculty lead student research project, with 36 students (III year) involved in the project.
Project on Women working in unorganized sector - Challenges faced during Covid times
This Student-Faculty research project attempts to understand the problems and challenges faced by working women in unorganized sector in Delhi with special attention to the pandemic situation. It also strives to understand the dual responsibility of women working at home and outside and their coping strategies. This project was initiated in August, 2020 by the project coordinators, Ms. Nirmala Muralidhar (faculty, Department of HDFE) and Ms. Prerna Butta (faculty, Department of HDFE). It is a faculty lead student research project, with 30 students (II year) involved in the project.

Extension Activities
Valentine's Day Celebration - February 14th, 2021
The students of the Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment celebrated this Valentine's Day in a unique way by spreading warmth, love and being a reason for many smiles. A group of students distributed chocolates, snacks, food and clothes to the under privileged children and their families. While some of them spent time with the underprivileged children by dancing and enjoying with them. Others visited senior citizen, who live alone, in order to share homemade food and quality time with them. One of our student showed her love towards nature by planting saplings. Since the humans are not the only ones who need love, some of the students provided medication and required help to animals, others fed food to stray dogs and cows.
Meeting with parents (Joy of Giving week) - November 5th, 2020
The Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment organised a meeting on November 5th, 2020 to thank everyone who contributed in the initiative in the form of material things, time and effort. The whole journey of Joy of Giving week was showcased through a power point presentation. Principal, Professor Swati Pal, faculty members of the HDFE Department, JDMC, Students and their parents, joined the meeting. Many participants shared their experiences.
Joy of Giving Week - October 2nd, 2020 to October 8th, 2020
Joy of Giving also known as Daan Ustav is the festival of giving, which is celebrated in the first week of October each year. From the past three years, the Department of HDFE is celebrating this festival in the week of October. This year the Department planned and distributed different things like medicines, masks, sanitizers, biscuits, ration, chips, fruits, soaps, notebooks and so on, to the underprivileged children and senior citizens near the residential areas as well as in the following organizations:-

Joy of Giving Week - October 1st to October 6th, 2019
The Department of HDFE in collaboration with Womenite celebrated, 'Joy of Giving' week from 1st October, 2019 - 6th October, 2019, with disadvantaged children in NGO's, slum clusters and with senior citizens. Activities were planned for children, like, art & craft, games, storytelling, puppet making etc. The students distributed biscuits, juices, toffees and other things. They also screened the eyes of children below 6yrs for symptoms of retinoblastoma. Following organizations were visited in the Joy of giving week:-

- Children's Week Celebration - November 7th to November 14th, 2017
An exhibition of students' work was organized by the Department of Human Development and Family Empowerment on 14th November 2017 at JDM College Auditorium to mark the culmination of an eventful Children's Week Celebration. The week was inaugurated with the launch of an awareness campaign on Retinoblastoma in collaboration with Centre for Sight, New Delhi on 7th November 2017. There were a number of other activities organized over the next week on various themes associated with children and child development. These were:
- Poster Making
- Slogan/quotation writing
- Film screening
- Creating awareness pamphlets/ placards
- Presentation of Case Studies
- Group Discussions
All the work done by the students over the Children's Week was put on display at the exhibition on Children's Day i.e. 14th November 2017. It was conceptualized and managed by the students of HDFE. They had developed creative ways to express issues of Child's health, Child Rights and development.
